There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry --
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll --
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the human Soul!
-- Emily Dickinson (1826)
Emily Dickinson's verses ring so true (as does most poetry). How often have we been carried away into magical worlds by the sheer power of literature, poetry, art, dance, film, photography ...
This poem immediately came to mind during that weekend at Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz Beach. It was gorgeous, kite-flying weather. Kites were soaring alongside the sea gulls. Then, I saw this one:

There I was back again in J. M. Barrie's world of Peter Pan! That pirate frigate in the air immediately swept me to Never Never Land.

Search for those Frigates! They come in so many forms.

This kite is funny and gorgeous and it is right that it has something poetical about it. I love to read poetry... in french or in english :)
ReplyDeleteDear SoapyMermaid, so glad to hear you love poetry in French or English. My parents were francophiles and read a lot of Victor Hugo's poetry among others. Alas, I can only read the English translations. They are beautiful!
ReplyDeletewoah that kite is freaking incredible! x
